Quick answers before you run
- Which running tracks are open to the public?
- 677 of the tracks in this directory are confirmed open to the public — almost all public park tracks and city recreation tracks are free and open dawn-to-dusk, and we mark them with a green "Open to the public" badge. School and college tracks are a grey area: a lot of districts let the community run on the track when teams aren't practicing, but some lock the gates or restrict it to students, so those are flagged "access varies." When in doubt, go early morning or evening outside of school hours, and check the listing or call ahead. Browse tracks open to the public →
- Are running tracks free?
- Public park and city tracks are almost always free — no membership, no sign-up, just show up and run. The tracks that charge are the indoor ones: field houses, armories, and rec centers sometimes ask for a day pass or membership, and a few marquee indoor facilities (like The Armory in New York) run on paid hours. Outdoor school and college tracks are usually free when they're open to the community. We flag paid or members-only tracks so there are no surprises when you drive out. Find free public tracks →
- Indoor or outdoor — what should I look for?
- 3,265 tracks here are outdoor and 572 are indoor — Outdoor tracks are the classic 400m ovals at parks, high schools and stadiums: free, open, and everywhere. Indoor tracks — usually 200m banked ovals in a field house or armory — are what keep you running through winter and rain, which is why they matter most in cold states. If you run intervals or need a measured distance year-round, look for an indoor track; for everyday laps in decent weather, the nearest outdoor oval is hard to beat. Browse indoor tracks →
- What surface is the track?
- It matters more than people expect. 292 tracks here are confirmed rubber / all-weather — a modern rubberized (polyurethane) track is springy, fast, easy on the joints, and runs well wet or dry — ideal for speed work. Older tracks are dirt or cinder (soft but slow and puddle-prone), grass (gentle, uneven), or asphalt (hard, hot, but always open). We pull the surface from the venue's own description, its website, and runner reviews wherever it's stated. Browse tracks by surface →
- Where can I run at night?
- 189 tracks in this directory are confirmed lit for night running — floodlit tracks are gold in winter when it's dark by 5pm. Many park and stadium tracks keep the lights on into the evening, and we flag the ones with confirmed lighting. Always check the posted closing time: a lot of park tracks are technically open late but the lights (and the gates) follow the park's own hours. Find lit tracks for night running →
- How are the tracks ranked?
- By what runners actually say: Google rating weighted by review count, so a 4.7 with 900 reviews outranks a lone 5.0. The data comes from public map listings, the venues' own websites, and real reviews — no track pays for placement, and no track can buy a rank.
