If you can only run before work or after it, half the year it's dark at both ends — and an unlit track is a rolled-ankle waiting to happen. A floodlit oval solves it: even, ankle-height-free light, a measured loop you don't have to share with traffic, and none of the "is that a pothole or a shadow" guessing you get on an unlit road or trail. In winter, when it's dark by five, a lit track is the difference between running and skipping it. In summer, running after sunset is how you beat the heat and the crowds. What to check before an after-dark run

A track can have lights and still go dark on you — so two things are worth a glance before you head out. First, the posted closing time: many park and school tracks are technically open into the evening, but the lights (and often the gates) follow the venue's own hours, so a track can be "lit" and still shut off at nine. We show open-now hours on the listings where we have them. Second, whether the lights are on a schedule or a request — some tracks only light up for booked events or team practice. When in doubt, call. Beyond that, the usual after-dark sense applies: tell someone your route, stick to well-used tracks, and a headlamp is a cheap backup if a bank of lights is out.
