About this directory
RunningTracks.net is an independent directory of 3,670 running tracks across 51 US states — the public 400m ovals at parks and high schools, the indoor field-house and armory tracks that keep people running through winter, and the college stadiums where the surface is fast and the lanes are painted fresh.
It exists to answer one question: where can I actually run laps near me? That sounds simple until you try it. Google Maps will show you a hundred "tracks," half of them locked behind a school fence, and none of them will tell you the thing you need to know before you drive over — is it open to the public, is it free, is it indoor or outdoor, what's the surface, and are there lights if you can only run after dark. This site pulls those details together so you can pick a track in a minute instead of guessing.
Listings are compiled from public map and business data, then filtered to genuine running tracks — the ovals you run on, not sporting-goods stores or unrelated "track" businesses. On top of the listings, we mine each track's own website and real runner reviews for the things that actually decide where you go: public access (open to everyone, a school track with community hours, or members-only), whether it's free, indoor vs outdoor, the surface (springy rubber all-weather, soft dirt or cinder, gentle grass, or hard asphalt), whether it's lit for night running, the lap distance and lane count, and whether there's an infield field, restrooms, water, or parking. We re-crawl on a rolling basis to catch resurfacings, closures, and newly opened tracks.
Our "best of" rankings are computed from Google ratings weighted by review volume — no track can pay for a placement or a rank. Because access changes with the seasons and the school calendar, we always present public-access and free flags as our best read of the evidence, not a guarantee: a school track that's open to the community in summer may lock its gates during team practice, so a quick check before a special trip is always worth it.
We are not affiliated with any track, park district, school, or college listed. If you manage a track and want a correction — hours, access, surface, or a listing that shouldn't be here — email hello@runningtracks.net and we'll fix it in the next refresh.
