Outdoor running tracks near you

The outdoor oval is the track most people picture — a 400-meter loop where four laps in the inside lane make almost exactly a mile, painted with lane lines and usually wrapped around a football or soccer field. You'll find them at public parks, high schools, colleges, and stadiums, and the best part is that most are free and open: no membership, no sign-up, just show up and run. Park and city tracks are typically open dawn-to-dusk; school and college tracks often welcome the community when teams aren't training. Surfaces range from a fast, springy rubberized all-weather track to older dirt/cinder, grass, or asphalt ovals — it changes how the track runs, so it's worth knowing before you go. Outdoor is the everyday default for laps, intervals, and a measured mile in decent weather. There are 3265 tracks outdoor tracks in this directory, across 51 states. Outdoor or indoor?

Outdoor tracks win on access and the full oval — free, open, a true 400m loop, and everywhere. The catch is weather and daylight: they're at the mercy of rain, ice, and how early it gets dark. Indoor tracks trade the open sky for certainty — climate-controlled, lit, and measured, so a winter session always happens — usually on a shorter 200m loop, and sometimes for a fee. Plenty of towns have one of each.
